The Blanding’s turtle is a freshwater species native to southern Ontario. It has been designated a Species-At-Risk both provincially and federally due to threats such as habitat loss, road mortality, and predation.
The Blanding's Turtle Headstarting Program, led by the Toronto Zoo, raises hatchling turtles in captivity for two years to dramatically increase their survival chances against predators before releasing them into the wild, primarily Rouge National Urban Park, to help rebuild dwindling populations of this threatened species
Dig Deeper: What features would help you identify a Blanding's turtle? What were the called in native legends?
