Please note, I am not versed in electronic repair. This was a guess using some logic and a little SWAG(is non-SWAG a thing?) to restore function back to the controls and allow me to get the cassette to eject.
I had a newly acquired TD-700 on the bench to test. On my first test, it would load, take up slack, then sit in pause. FF/RW, Seek, Eject function fine. Play button would not respond(my basic supply only provides up to 1a, an up to 24V which could be an issue?). I could switch to radio with cassette loaded. Tuner functions fine.
The problem occurred when I forgot to eject the cassette, then turned bench power off. When I went to power back up, it just clicked and flashed as shown in the beginning of this video. It was seeming to cycle between cassette and tuner, but was non-responsive to any controls.
I opened to check load gear and belts, and decided I might be able to trick it into picking a side–cassette vs tuner–and if I could, maybe I'd have controls back. Just going visually, the switch that I ended depressing(looked up to be the Eject Switch) was the end of the geared track for the cassette carrier, which I supposed would have some function in communicating whether a cassette was in or out. The result did the trick, setting the unit to tuner and allowing the cassette to have the same functions available as in the initial testing. I still have to resolve the no play issue.
I made this to show lid removal and this fix as it may be useful to someone out there. These units are quite worth keeping around.
This unit appears to be in excellent condition, came from a 1979 Mercedes 300CD at a wrecking yard which was also in nice condition, appeared to have been garaged and probably didn't have much wrong with it, but could not be wholly rescued. I knew nothing of these units at the time I pulled this, but do have a BX-125 at home and have always regarded Nak components as some of the best, so I was happy to pull the stereo along with the car parts I was initially after. I didn't grab the amp or speakers, and wish I had considered and looked to see what it was. I have a Nakamichi PA-350 on the way for this, and it will live on in a Mercedes W123.
