PGE358, Spring 2020: Principles of Formation Evaluation.
Instructor: Carlos Torres-Verdin, PhD, Professor, Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin.
This video-recorded lecture is an introduction to the formation evaluation of carbonate rocks. Special emphasis is placed on the measurement and/or quantification of (a) storage and flow properties, and (b) elastic and mechanical properties. Part 1 focuses on (a) the genesis and diagenesis of carbonate rocks and their controls on storage and flow properties, and (b) formation evaluation of carbonate rocks with conventional well logs. Part 2 (this part) examines the distribution of pore and throat sizes of carbonate rocks and their impact on storage and fluid-transport properties. Part 3 describes the use of advanced ("boutique") well logs (e.g., magnetic resonance, borehole images, spectroscopy, and formation testing) for the in-situ evaluation of petrophysical and mechanical properties of complex carbonate rocks.
