What we do when we navigate an ever changing, chaotic, uncertain landscape is very similar to what we do when confronted with not knowing the answer to a question. Both are how we respond to uncertainty.

So, what do you typically do when you don’t know the answer? Me – I often fake self-assurance and confidence, especially if I might let someone down. It’s a habit born from years and years of trying to impress parents, teachers, and professors. And immediately following my habitual behavior are feelings of guilt and shame. “I should know the answer. Everyone’s turning to me. What if what I just said was wrong. Now I’ve led them astray. Who am I kidding?”

I invite you to share your typical response to not knowing. What is your typical pattern?

This week, test the waters. Push into that chaotic landscape with a small experiment that’s scary but not terrifying, and then come back to where it’s safe to make sense of what happened. Most often, you’ll find that your fears and anxieties were overblown. Remember, our brains see uncertainty and change as a threat to our survival. What you’re doing with a small experiment is proving to your brain that this particular form of chaos is not as scary as it seems.
