Welcome back to our channel! At District Hemp, it is our goal to provide you with the latest, greatest, and basics of hemp education. Today, we will be breaking down the cannabis plant and discussing cannabinoids.
There are two types of cannabinoids: phytocannabinoids and endocannabinoids. While these two compounds are very similar in the way they interact with your body, they are entirely different. The prefix ‘endo’ comes from the Greek ‘endon’ meaning “within, inner, absorbing, or containing". On the other hand, PHYTOcannabinoids contain the prefix ‘phyto’, which literally means “in relation to plants” (again, Greek). This means that ENDOcannabinoids are made within the body and PHYTOcannabinoids are made by plants. Just remember, endo = internal and phyto = in relation to plants. Now keep in mind, cannabis isn’t the only plant to produce cannabinoids.
There are actually a variety of plants that contain cannabinoids. These plants include pepper, cacao, flaxseed, and echinacea (daisies). However, right at this moment, we want to focus on those cannabinoids produced by the cannabis plant.
Over 100 cannabinoids have been isolated from the cannabis plant and of these 100+ cannabinoids, there are some better understood than others. Besides CBD and THC, you also have cannabinol (CBN), cannabigerol (CBG), and cannaivarin (CBV) – just to name a few. Now, these compounds don’t start as themselves. In fact, they start with cannabinoid acids. Some of these acids include cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), cannabichromenenic acid (CBCA), cannabigerovarinic acid (CBGVA), tetrahydrocanabivarinic acid (THCVA), cannabidivarinic acid (CBDVA), and cannabichromevarinic acid (CBCVA). When these acids are exposed to heat, they go through a process called “decarboxylation”. Basically, decarboxylation just means add heat, remove the acid, and voilà, you’re left with a cannabinoid.
