Echoes of the Ancestors honors the power, resilience, and enduring legacy of Black communities across Montgomery County, past, present, and future.
This episode begins in one of the county’s oldest continuously Black communities, centered around Scotland A.M.E. Zion Church in Potomac. Built by freed slaves and their descendants and opened in 1924, the church became the heart of the Scotland community, serving as a beacon of faith, learning, support, and hope long before a formal school existed.
Presented by the Montgomery County Board of Education, this Black History Month feature reflects on the foundational role Black communities have played in shaping education, culture, and opportunity for generations.
