Clip 1
Monzón brings his head and weight over the lead foot.
He does a small rear foot step up, then pushes off that rear foot and folds out the jab.
The key detail:
He finishes with his head over the lead foot.
That’s what I call a square jab.
Clip 2
First beat:
Head over lead foot.
Folded jab.
Second beat:
Valdez looks to counter with his lead.
Monzón pulls square — head and weight move straight back, shoulders stay square.
Third beat:
Monzón pushes off the rear foot.
Folds out another jab.
Fourth beat:
Another pull square.
Clip 3
Difference between square and bladed jabs.
• Square jab: starts and ends with head over the lead foot
• Bladed jab: starts and ends with head over the rear foot
If you want to play these jab games, you want the square version.
Here Monzón is waiting for Valdez to commit.
First beat:
Head over lead foot.
Monzón pulls square, baiting the lead counter.
Valdez doesn’t commit. It’s a feint.
Second beat:
Monzón counters with the rear straight.
Valdez can still pull square because he never committed.
Clip 4
Monzón folds out the jab.
Head stays over the lead foot.
This time, instead of pulling square, he uses a rear hand parry.
That parry squares Monzón’s shoulders, keeps his head and weight over the lead foot, and sets up the lead hook on the exit.
