If you live in an apartment, you need to find a dog that is comfortable in small spaces and can get along with your neighbors. There are a few different breeds that are perfect for apartment living. The best dog breeds for apartment living are the Affenpinscher, American Eskimo Dog, Australian Terrier, and Basset Hound.

Affenpinscher

While the Affenpinscher is a small breed, don't let their size fool you. These pups are feisty and full of energy! Affenpinschers are also very smart, and their high level of intelligence means they're quick to learn new tricks and commands. All that said, the Affenpinscher does require some regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. A brisk walk once or twice a day should suffice, although they will also enjoy some playtime in a park or yard. And because they tend to be relatively calm indoors, the Affenpinscher is a good choice for those living in apartments or other small spaces.

Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier is a lively little dog that is also very loving and protective of its family. Despite its small size, it is a brave and tenacious dog that is not afraid to take on much larger dogs. It is also an excellent watchdog. The Yorkshire Terrier is an energetic breed that loves to play and needs plenty of exercise, so it is not a good choice for lazy owners or those who live a sedentary lifestyle.

The name Basset is derived from the French word bas, meaning "low", with the attenuating suffix -et meaning "small", together meaning "rather low". Basset Hounds are heavy dogs for their height, and are known for their long, droopy ears, three-color coats and short legs. They are widely recognised in popular culture for appearing in commercials, advertising products such as Coca-Cola and aristocratic flareups such as Lady and the Tramp. Bassets are one of six recognized breeds in the hound group by the American Kennel Club (AKC), as well as many other kennel clubs around the world.

Beagle

The Beagle is a small to medium-sized breed of dog, similar in appearance to the much larger foxhound. The Beagle is a scent hound, developed primarily for hunting hare. Beagles are intelligent but, as a result of being bred for the long chase, can be single-minded and determined, which means they require patient, creative training techniques. They do not generally feature highly in obedience trials; however, their acquiescence to their owners' wishes makes them excellent companion dogs. Beagles are curious and active dogs with a strong sense of smell. This combination makes them superb hunting dogs; however, it also means that they can be difficult to train and control if they pick up an interesting scent. For this reason, Beagles are not generally considered suitable for first-time dog owners or those who are not willing to put in the time and effort required to train them properly.

Bichon Frise

Bichon Frises are one of the best dogs for apartment living. They're small (9-18 pounds), don't require a lot of exercise, and are known for being cheerful, gentle companions. Bichons are also hypoallergenic, so they're a good choice for people with allergies.
