An AMA is defined as going Against Medical Advice.
It's a term used in medical settings when the patient decides that they are going to leave treatment against the recommendations of the medical or clinical team.

Other terms that you may hear used are ACA, which is Against Clinical Advice, or ATA, which is Against Treatment Advice. They are all variations of the same theme, which is that the individual is leaving medical treatment prematurely.

It is not uncommon for people within the first few days of treatment to start experiencing some unpleasant withdrawal symptoms that make them want to leave treatment and go out and use. They may also start feeling so much better that they feel that they don't need to be in treatment anymore.

In either of those instances, what we know as medical professionals is that it is not that quick and easy to complete the treatment process. We have recommendations of what the full continuum of care should look like, and when individuals want to make up their own mind to leave treatment we consider that going against medical advice.
If you are dealing with a loved one who wants to leave treatment prematurely, one of the things that you can do is be firm and kind with them and remind them of all the reasons why they went to treatment in the first place.

Let them know that you love and support them, that you will be there for them when they are ready to complete treatment and come home. As well as remind them that they have gotten themselves into a situation that was significant enough for them to need treatment.
