As I made my way from Kandy to Sigiriya, we stopped at Rangiri Dambulla Cape Temple........and it did not disappoint!

Dambulla Cave Temple consists of 5 caves (4 natural caves and one man made) filled with statues and paintings related to the Lord Buddha and his life. Built over centuries, some of the oldest caves and statues are over 2100 years old (1st Century BCE).

I decided to pay for a guide, which ended up being a really good decision and something that I would highly recommend. He explained the religious significance of the temple as well as the meaning behind the statues and caves. You would have to do a considerable amount of research to find all of the information that he went through during the tour!

It was a truly amazing experience. Temples and other religious sites can be very similar but Dambulla Cave Temple was definitely something very different. Some of the paintings are 700 years old (other were retouched 350 years ago). Whilst other countries have similarly old paintings, they are usually in a house or more likely, in a museum. These painting however are in a damp cave, in a hot country, and some of them are still remarkably clear. Supposedly this is due to the natural paints that were used, of which the method to manufacture these paints has now been lost through the generations.

We also stopped off at a Hindu temple outside of Kandy which was also really interesting. Whilst I wasn't allowed inside because there was a procession on the way, the Hindu temple itself was incredibly intricate.
