Chapter 1: Introduction to toxicology
Objectives
• Describe types of poisons according to action
• Demonstrate clinical presentation and diagnosis of poisoning
• Describe general lines of treatment of poisoning
Objectives
This course aims to:
Learn the basics of clinical toxicology that will enable the student to diagnose
different types of food and water toxic contaminants
Understand the serious consequences of exposure to environmental and occupational chemicals
-To provide skills for dealing with common medico-legal conditions
-Understand rights and duties of health inspector
a.1 Understand the general principles of poisoning regarding manner of poisoning symptoms and signs of toxicity of common toxic substances and environmental pollutants
a.2 Identify common medico legal conditions ( e.g. death & post mortem changes , wounds, head injuries, violet asphyxia…etc.)
a.3 Follow strictly rules of professional ethics
b.1 Analyze, evaluate and interpret clinical cases of toxicity.
b.2 Interpret different case scenarios related to common medico-legal conditions
b.3 Avoid committing malpractice
c.1 Evaluate and diagnose different common toxic substances and environmental pollutants
c.2 gain experience to give a report about many medico legal conditions as death,
wounds, head injuries, firearm, violent asphyxia and other injuries
d.1 Demonstrate clear, sensitive, and effective communication with different
individuals through communication effectively with seniors colleagues, and
coworkers.
d.2 Use information technology to serve the development of professional practice and to obtain information and knowledge
