This video is about the different types of crash barriers that are used on Indian Highways to prevent accidents and save lives. Crash barriers, also known as traffic safety barriers, are designed to guide errant vehicles back on the road or reduce the severity of collisions. As per IRC 5, the following are the basic types of crash barriers:
Flexible barriers: These are made from wire rope supported between frangible posts. They deflect more than other barrier types and may pose a risk to motorcyclists. They may be the best option for minimizing injuries to vehicle occupants.
Semi-rigid barriers: These are usually made from steel beams or rails. They deflect less than flexible barriers and can be located closer to the hazard when space is limited. They may be able to redirect secondary impacts.
Rigid barriers: These are usually made of concrete and do not deflect. They should be used only where there is no room for deflection of a semi-rigid or flexible barrier. They may provide the highest level of containment of heavy vehicles.
Vehicle parapets: These are rigid barriers in steel, concrete or a combination of both. They are installed onto highway structures such as bridges, retaining walls or building facilities. They restrain an errant vehicle from falling off the structures.
According to IRC: 119-2015, there are two main types of crash barriers: road edge barriers and median barriers.
Road edge barriers are provided on the outer edge of the carriageway, especially on curves, slopes, bridges and embankments.
Median barriers are provided on the central verge of divided highways to prevent vehicles from crossing over to the opposite carriageway.
Crash barriers can be made of metal, concrete or rope, depending on the site conditions and design requirements.
In this video, the intention is to bridge the gap between clauses mentioned in the code (IRC 5) related to crash barriers and the practical application of these clauses in reality on the Highways.
