Officials have been asked to explore options for the government to mirror the so-called 'open banking' system which is used by landlords and lenders.
It would allow them to check a person's bank statement to see what savings they have to see whether or not they are fully in need of the benefits they are claiming.
The government is hoping this will allow them to crackdown on money lost to benefit fraud.
But critics say it's too invasive.
