"We are the mainly significant trading partners and we are big investors in Asia and in Europe as well, we share the same interest and stability in the economic development. And in today's world, we share a common concern about dealing with some of the problems created by globalisation. So I think the meeting going on this week will give us an opportunity for frank and constructive discussions about economic and political issues."

STORYLINE:

Speaking on his arrival in Beijing, Chris Patten, EU Commissioner for external relations spoke of the importance of trade between China and the European Union.

Mr. Patten is in China to attend the Asian Europe Foreign Minister's meeting on May 24-25.

Patten and his team were met at the airport by Zhang Tuo, Director General of European Department of Chinese Foreign Ministry.
