Indirect Evaporative Air Cooler with Dehumidification Bed
Indirect evaporative cooling (IEC) is an efficient and environmentally friendly method of cooling air without increasing its humidity. The addition of a dehumidification bed enhances its performance by removing moisture from the air before the cooling process, making it suitable for humid climates and applications where dry air is essential.
How It Works:
Primary Air Stream (Supply Air):
Intake and Dehumidification: Warm and humid air is drawn into the system and passed through a dehumidification bed. The bed contains desiccant materials (like silica gel or zeolites) that absorb moisture from the air, reducing its humidity.
Heat Exchange: The now dehumidified air passes through a heat exchanger where it is cooled indirectly. In an IEC system, the primary air does not come into direct contact with water. Instead, it flows through channels or tubes that are cooled by the secondary air stream.
Secondary Air Stream (Evaporative Air):
Water Evaporation: A separate stream of air (the secondary air) is drawn over or through wetted surfaces or a water-soaked medium. As this air passes through, water evaporates, absorbing heat from the air and cooling it.
Heat Rejection: The cooled, moist secondary air flows through the heat exchanger, where it absorbs heat from the dehumidified primary air. This process cools the primary air without adding moisture to it.
Exhaust: After transferring its heat, the secondary air, now warmer and more humid, is exhausted outside.
Benefits:
Energy Efficiency: IEC systems use less energy compared to traditional air conditioning systems because they rely on the natural process of water evaporation for cooling.
Improved Air Quality: By incorporating a dehumidification bed, the system provides dry, cool air, which is beneficial for indoor environments where excess humidity can lead to discomfort or mould growth.
