India had firmly stated that the seal is a living testament to its unbroken cultural heritage, identifying the figure as Shiva in his form as Pashupati. However, Truschke argued that the figure is not Shiva but rather a deity belonging to Eurasian culture, drawing comparisons with Proto-Elamite artifacts from ancient Iran. Indian experts have strongly pushed back against this claim, pointing out that animals depicted on the seal — such as the elephant, water buffalo, and rhinoceros — were native exclusively to the Indian subcontinent and were never found in ancient Iran. They further questioned Truschke's argument by highlighting that the human figure on the seal is shown in a yogic posture, asking whether yoga, too, would be attributed to Iranian origins.
