What exactly is a duende?
In European folklore, the word originally referred to a house spirit—an invisible presence believed to live inside homes, causing mysterious noises or small disturbances.
But when Spanish culture arrived in the Americas, something fascinating happened.
The concept of the duende transformed.
Across Latin America, the word began to describe territorial spirits connected to forests, mountains, rivers, and mines. These beings became guardians of the land, protectors of nature, and symbolic regulators of the relationship between humans and the environment.
In this video we explore:
• the linguistic origin of the word duende
• house spirits in medieval Spain
• European creatures like brownies, goblins and kobolds
• how the concept changed during colonial times
• the territorial spirits of Latin America
Including figures such as:
Muqui, the spirit of the mines in the Andes
Chullachaqui, the protector of the Amazon rainforest
Aluxes, guardians of crops in Maya culture
Pombero, the forest spirit of the Guaraní world
This research reveals how the duende became a powerful cultural symbol linking mythology, territory and human imagination.
This video is part of the Cultural Duendism Project, exploring folklore, myth and symbolic landscapes across the world.
