Amrithavarshini is a popular and melodious Audava raga (pentatonic scale) in Carnatic music, famously known as the "Raga of Rain". It is a symmetric, pentatonic (Audava-Audava) Raga, generally classified as a Janya of the 66th Melakarta, Chitrambari. However, because it lacks both Rishabham (R) and Dhaivatam (D), it can also be theoretically derived from Mechakalyani (65th). The Raga’s beauty lies in its "brisk" and "sparkling" quality, often used for quick patterns. Standard prayogas include PMGMG, SGMPNM, and PNSĠ. The Prati Madhyamam (M2) provides a sharp, vibrant energy, while the Gandharam (G3) is often sung softly without much oscillation (gamaka) to maintain its "cool" effect.
Rasa and Aesthetics
Emotion: It primarily evokes Vira (heroic), Adbhuta (wonder), and Ananda (bliss). It is associated with joy, exuberance, and a sense of "love" or "hopeless romanticism".
Therapeutic Value: In raga chikitsa (music therapy), it is believed to cool the body and alleviate conditions related to excessive "pitta" (bile) by increasing the "jala tatva" (water element).
Visual Imagery: Practitioners often compare its mood to "peacocks dancing in the rain with their feathers wide open". It is often equated with Megh Malhar due to the shared "rain" theme, though technically it is closer to Raag Malashree or a version of Amritvarshini within the Kalyan Thaat.
The composition Anandamritakarshini, composed by the legendary Muthuswami Dikshitar is best known for its legendary association with bringing rain. According to tradition, Dikshitar sang this kriti at Ettayapuram, a drought-stricken region in Tamil Nadu. When he reached the line "Salilam Varshaya Varshaya Varshaya" (Shower water, shower, shower), heavy rains began to fall. The title translates to "She who draws the nectar of bliss". The song praises the Goddess as the source of knowledge and compassion, specifically requesting her to grant "Sadyas-Suvrushti" (immediate, good rain).
