Boolavogue is an incredibly moving song about the Irish rebellion of 1798. It tells the story of the at first reluctant but then inspirational rebel leader Father Murphy, a parish priest from the small town of Boolavogue in County Wexford. He led his parishioners in battle against the British and their army of mercenaries.
Against all odds they won several skirmishes against professional soldiers, armed mostly with only courage, pikes, and a small number of guns. Ultimately, they were defeated at the battle of Vinegar Hill, the day the river Slaney ran red.
Father Murphy was brutally tortured an executed, his head hung a pike to discourage further rebellion.
But even a doomed fight against tyranny is not in vain, for “‘tis better to die like a man than be slaughtered like a sheep.”
The song was written a hundred years after these events in 1898 by Patrick Joseph McCall and set to the ancient Irish aire "Eochaill".
I performed this version with a Richard Howell classical guitar and a Weber Bitterroot mandolin. It was recorded outside on a balmy March day in Paonia, Colorado. The next day it was snowing! Winter is not yet over, but Spring is on it's way...
