✅ Current Rules & Limits
• Factory‑fitted (OEM) tinted glass is legal if it meets these limits:
• Front + rear windshields: ≥ 70% Visible Light Transmission (VLT)
• Side windows: ≥ 50% VLT
• Aftermarket tint films (sun‑control films you add later) are generally banned:
• The Supreme Court’s 2012 ruling prohibits applying any film, regardless of VLT, on safety glass
⸻
🆕 April 2021 Amendment
• Rule 100 of CMVR was amended to redefine “safety glazing,” now including plastic films if they conform to BIS safety standards .
• HOWEVER: This was meant mainly for factory-installed or OEM safety glazing, not necessarily aftermarket additions .
⸻
⚖️ Kerala High Court (Sept 2024)
• In Kerala, the High Court ruled aftermarket films are legal if certified, meeting ≥ 70% VLT front/rear, ≥ 50% sides, per amended Rule 100 & IS 2553 standards .
• Its interpretation is binding in Kerala, but may serve as persuasive precedent elsewhere .
