Today's Doctors are data entry clerks

Most doctors today are just highly paid data-entry clerks.
Let’s stop pretending
There's a "Data Entry" Epidemic in Medicine!
I know that sounds harsh.
But look at your last shift.
Yes, you diagnosed patients.
Yes, you saved lives.
But here is the blind spot that is killing our profession.
You spent more time looking at a screen than looking at your patient.
Hospital software (#HMS/#EMR) was supposed to make us faster.
Instead, it has become the biggest bottleneck in healthcare.
Why?
Most hospital software was never built for us.
It was built around us.
And then shoved into our daily work.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth.
Hospital software is decided in boardrooms.
Configured by IT teams.
Rolled out by vendors.
And then handed to doctors with instructions to “adjust”.
Junior doctors end up doing most of the documentation.
Nurses carry the workflow across shifts.
Insurance desks absorb the chaos.
But when the software is designed, none of them are in the room.
So what does the system optimise for?
Billing fields.
Compliance checklists.
Reports that look good in reviews.
Not clinical thinking.
Not OPD reality.
Not how doctors actually work.
That’s how we land up with:
14 clicks to prescribe a routine medicine
Mandatory entries that mean nothing clinically
Alerts that break concentration mid-thought
And when we push back, we’re told:
“Doctors just resist change.”
No.
Doctors resist being treated like data entry staff
after years of clinical training.
Now here’s the part we don’t say out loud.
We complain about bad software.
But we’re rarely invited to design it.
And when we are, it’s after everything is already built.
This has to stop.
We don't need more "training" on bad systems.
We need systems that respect our time.
If technology forces you to look at the screen more than the patient,
the technology is failing.
It is time we demand a seat at the design table.
Not as "users" to be managed.
But as architects of our own workflow.
#Doctors your turn:
If you could delete ONE thing from your HMS or EMR tomorrow, what would it be?
Say it plainly.
