The show is to be held 10.15am to 3.45pm on 8th October 2022 at the Parish Hall, St. Thomas More Church, Mainway, Alkrington, Middleton, Manchester, M24 1PP. Which is just 2 minutes from Junction 20 of the M60 motorway. [https://w3w.co/outer.hobby.flies]
Finding us:
Accessibility : The hall is all on one level and there are no large steps. The venue is very large, open and airy.
Facilities : Refreshments are served throughout the day, which include hot and cold food and tea and coffee. Toilets (including wheelchair friendly) are also available.
Parking : There is plenty of free on street parking nearby on Mainway (the road next to the venue).
More details can be found here: https://manchester.bcss.org.uk/home/e...
As well as the show there will be a wide array of cacti and succulents for sale from many local nuseries as well as from our own branch members. In the afternoon we always have a speaker give a talk about Mesembs and this usually comprises a digital presentation or sometimes plants. Either way a lot of knowledge is always imparted to the audience.
Mesembs (or Mesembryanthemums to give them their proper name) are plants that mainly grow in South Africa and Namibia. The most well known type of mesemb (at least in this country to the general public) is the Ice Plant which are often seen growing in sunny gardens with their large showy flowers, but also one might recognise Lithops or Living Stones which are sometimes seen in garden centres.
However, there are many, many genera of Mesemb and the show caters for as many of them as possible. There are 42 classes to admire on the day of the show and plants on display range from tiny bodied plants like Conophytums up to tree like shrubs from the Mestoklema genus. Also on display will be plants from the generas Aloinopsis, Titanopsis, Argyroderma, Cheiridopsis, Delosperma, Dinteranthus, Lapidaria, Faucaria, Fenestraria, Frithia, Gibbaeum, Muiria, Glottiphyllum, Lampranthus, Pleiospilos, Trichodiadema, Carpobrotus plus many more.
Between 2007 and 2019 the Manchester Branch of the British Cactus and Succulent Society has hosted the North West Mesemb Show. Sadly we have been unable to hold a show in 2020 and 2021. Prior to us hosting it the event was run by the Mid-Cheshire BCSS Branch by members who had a keen interest in Mesembs in general, the first show being in 1986. The event is therefore a long standing annual event.
It is a great day out to look at some unusual plants that you are unlikely to see elsewhere. Hopefully we will see you there.
