For many years we have believed that Titanic’s central propellor was 4 bladed. But the reality is we have no first-hand sources to confirm this. Contrary to popular belief we have no photos of Titanic’s propellors, at least none before she sank! The wreck also is little help to us, as the central propellor is buried deep in the silt.
Since her sinking all we have had to go on is what her two sisters were fitted with (both 4 bladed). But this now seems unlikely. A new source, discovered recently suggests an alternative. This source, an engineering notebook from Harland and Wolff shipyard suggests that Titanic was fitted with a three bladed central propellor and at present, there doesn’t seem to be any evidence to contradict it.
This video explains this source, and why such a change was needed.
