NANAIMO -- Western Forest Products is planning for the future by investing a major investment.

Western Forest Products announced a 200-million dollar commitment to mills on Vancouver Island. That announcement was made in front of hundreds at the Vancouver Island Economic Summit in Nanaimo Tuesday.

Western Forest Products says the money will pay for upgrades and streamlining that will keep the mills buzzing for years to come, supplying the ever growing Asian Market. Sixty percent of the lumber produced by Western Forest Products is shipped to key Asian markets, including China and Japan.

The Capital Investment will create an estimated one-thousand new jobs on Vancouver Island, bringing Western Forest Products Island workforce up to more than 31-hundred people. The economic impact will be more than one-billion dollars a year.

Western Forest Products is the largest tenure and lumber producer on the BC Coast. The Money and jobs won't arrive instantly, but the company says it has an aggressive timeline and hopes to have the upgrades and streamlining in place by the end of next year.
