For years, the Los Angeles #Pride Parade was a guaranteed day of gay frivolity, dotted with messages of protest. 2016 was on track to be the celebration of all celebrations. It was the first parade since marriage equality and Hillary Clinton had just broken the glass ceiling as an official presidential nominee.

But the LGBT world changed this June morning and gave a stark reminder of the real meaning of the pride parades. The nation woke up to news about the mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida and a thwarted terrorist attack on the L.A. Parade that morning.

The 2016 Los Angeles Pride Parade went on with the revelry of Dykes on Bikes and a SWAT team leading the way. Everyday people choosing to be a courageous activist for the day, just as the LGBT movement had started in 1969.

Waving a Wand now stands as a symbol of resistance: no matter what, we refuse to surrender our Pride.
