Anthony, a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, who experienced chronic homelessness and prison time, shares with listeners how he overcame hardships in life and now helps others.
Anthony began drinking around 10 years-old when he found his mother’s gin underneath the kitchen sink. Soon after, he started experimenting with marijuana and began using pills.
At 14, he quit school in the eighth grade and ran away from home. He joined the carnival, where Anthony said he got to drink and use drugs as much as he wanted to.
“I didn’t know until later on in life what I was basically doing was trying to fill up a hole that was empty inside of me,” Anthony said in an interview with Niki Curtis, community engagement director at Journey Magazine.
Anthony experienced 22 years of homelessness and multiple stints in prison. On March 29, 1999, he was arrested for the last time. The arresting police officer asked Anthony if he wanted help and arranged to get him placed in a treatment center. The experience changed his life. He has now been sober for 23 years.
Anthony spent seven years working as director of nursing at a psychiatric hospital until Oct. 1, 2021. He is now back in school studying to become a nurse practitioner.
“Don’t quit before the miracle happens,” Anthony said.
