1970s 1980s Old Photo Collections of Sunderland Town is a heartfelt journey back through two unforgettable decades, brought to life through rare old photo collections that capture everyday moments and major events across Sunderland Town.
Join us as we step back into Sunderland Town with unforgettable 1970s 1980s memories through rare old photo collections and heritage photos. This video is designed as one of our relaxed virtual heritage tours, allowing viewers to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the sights and stories that shaped our shared local heritage.
These carefully preserved heritage photos recall a time when life felt closer to the ground and community mattered deeply. From learning to parachute dive at Usworth Aerodrome to Billy Graham preaching in Sunderland Town, each image adds depth to the story of the 1970s 1980s.
Park Lane outdoor Market, the Durham County Show, the Plessey Factory, Brian Mills, and memorable beach scenes on a warm April day on 25th April 1984 are all part of these treasured old photo collections.
The video also reflects important moments of change during the 1970s 1980s, including Dame Margot Fontayne being elected Chancellor of Durham University in June 1982.
We remember the petrol queues of March 1977 alongside the excitement of the Lombard Rally in Lambton Park, moments captured forever in striking heritage photos that still resonate today.
There is sadness too, as we say farewell to the Mayfair Sweet Factory in 1977 and witness the demolition of the Roker End and Seaburn Hall in 1982. These scenes remind us why virtual heritage tours matter, helping protect memories that physical places can no longer hold.
The images also record CND protest marches in the town centre and the last shift at Boldon Colliery followed a year later by South Hetton pit last shift in March 1983, powerful chapters in Sunderland Town history and local heritage.
Adding colour and pride are visits from H.M.S. Arrow and Princess Margaret at Austin and Pickersgill, along with joyful South Hylton and East End Carnival Parades. Together, these old photo collections form a vivid portrait of Sunderland Town, celebrating its people, resilience, and spirit through timeless heritage photos and meaningful virtual heritage tours.
If you lived through the 1970s 1980s or simply love exploring local heritage, this video invites you to remember, reflect, and share your own stories.
