The English Springer Spaniel is a breed of gun dog, which was developed as the spaniel family of dogs became increasingly specialized in their roles during hunting. As the name suggests, the Springer Spaniel was used to flush or ‘spring’ prey, which would then be chased by hounds. While the earliest reference to springers can be found even in the late 1500s, careful breeding of land spaniels as springers began only in the 1800s. For a long time, cocker spaniels and springer spaniels were taken from the same litter. The former were the smaller dogs that were used to hunt woodcock, while the latter were the larger spaniels from the litter that were used to flush game. In the early 1900s, the Springer Spaniel was recognized as a distinct breed, and has remained a popular versatile hunting companion.

The average male English Springer stands between 19 and 21 inches, with weight around 50 pounds. The female has a height between 18 and 20 inches, with weight around 40 pounds. It is a dog of compact build, proud carriage, and length slightly greater than height. The eyes are an important feature of the breed – medium size, oval shape, set rather well apart and fairly deep in their sockets. Color of the iris matches the color of the coat. Ears are long and rather wide, hanging close to the cheeks, long enough to just reach the nose-tip. The undercoat is soft and dense, with the outer coat being of medium length, either flat or wavy. Colors recognized by the AKC are black and white; black, white and tan; liver and white; and liver, white and tan.

Grooming:The coat needs brushing at least twice weekly to remove mats and keep it shining. Clipping of hair every 2-3 months is recommended. The coat tends to be less profuse in lines that are field-bred. Brushing of teeth, cleaning of ears and trimming of nails have to be regular.

Temperament:The English Springer is typically a sociable, quick to learn and eager to please dog. It gets along very well with kids and other dogs and, with some training, other pets as well. It is known to select one family member as its favorite and tries to stick to that person. Its alertness and attentiveness make it a good guard dog.

Training:This breed places quite high in intelligence rankings, and is easy to train. It is a strong and energetic dog that requires a good amount of daily physical and mental exercise. A long walk or an outing in a field, and access to a yard at other times is ideal for an English Springer.

Health:The lifespan of an English Springer is 10 to 14 years. Hip dysplasia and retinal atrophy are two common disorders in the breed. Other problems seen are elbow dysplasia, retinal dysplasia, phosphofructokinase deficiency (which impairs cell ability to use carbohydrates for energy), ectropion and endopion. The breed is susceptible to obesity.
