multitracked via overbridge, mixed / mastered in ableton. learning my way on this machine. coming from multitracking several modules in the analogue domain into the laptop, it's a challenge to find my formula and achieve the same full sound, but moreso even within the composition working in this digital environment... and i'm here for it!
i was between a syntakt and this DN2 and i felt this one would be the real challenge an the other was everything i already knew, but thru an elektron lens. i'm new-ish to proper fm synthesis. i like that. i want to continue exploring blindly as i have done in all other endeavours, before coming across particular questions and wanting to achieve specific things. of course a great deal of what i've learned can be applied, esp having worked on digitakt for years but thru the lack of knowing, so many discoveries are made. it feels amazing to land places i wouldn't have expected or aimed for. knowing digitakt in and out has made navigating this one mostly effortless.
the more i learn about this machine the more impressed i am. i was blown away by the tones it's capable of when i was demoing it at perfect circuit. i knew right away, i'd be able to get a full track composed on one device. i spent about two hours standing at the table with headphones. biked eleven miles to get there and eleven miles back. the whole ride back i took the bike path and listened to every techno on DN2 yt vid i could find, hyping myself up. it's really living up to and exceeding my expectations. the key is building a formula. i've taken an approach that feels organic to my setup. bottom left, bassdrum, the cornerstone. above it, the bassline that rides on top of it, or in this case a melodic thing jumping thru many ranges. and upbeat hihat, a steady hat, and panning hats. this is me essentially imitating my own formula i've built in eurorack, to form an anchor and from there i can go wild. the ride is all the way top right. things where i'd imagine them to be. while demoing i discovered the track-swap function. super helpful when developing your formula. i am playing w/the idea of a secondary pattern being in the slot directly below. so pattern one would be the main idea, then maybe some sort of option to breakdown on pattern ten, vertically below the main one and then 2 and 11, 3 and 12, etc. but i tend to make full tracks on one pattern and use these boxes in a somewhat rudimentary fashion, compared to some. it's ideal for the style of this project.
i'd say it's an excellent box if you're in a position where you've sold some things, or many things and need a foundation for your studio or live setup. it's ideal in this way that if you're planning to rebuild your modular setup, this box will positively fill many roles as you rebuild your eurorack piece by piece. these things happen and having one core device can really make a difference. it's a real safe bet, as any of the tracks can be midi and you can make just about any sound. a recent vid i watched shows how applying key tracking mapping essentially turns the arpeggiator into a stepped modulation madhouse, which in the coming tracks i'll utilize.
if you're patient, it's potential is stupid. if you need instant techno results a syntakt can be much more direct. but this one is a limitless mimic octopus. seen a guy making nylon classical guitar arrangements, meanwhile i'm making atonal techno. it's a best and can do a lot on its own. will be nice to pair w/other devices in due time.
