Act one 00:05
one of the most important aspects of modern waste management is ensuring efficiency and minimising cost and emissions in waste collection. This covers aspects such as driving at night - to avoid traffic, and using computer aided route optimization - but also the utilisation of waste transfer stations. In today's video we will look at what a waste transfer station is, how they are used - and why they can be useful.
In a recent video we discussed how no one wants a landfill or smelly recycling plant right on their doorstep - and so landfills are likely to be quite a distance outside city centres and built up areas.
When you consider the sheer size of Australian capital cities - and the sprawling suburbs - you will realise how important it is that trucks are not driving all the way out - and all the way back every time.
Act 2 01:10
A waste transfer station is basically a location - generally in a city or built up area - where waste and recycling materials can be temporarily deposited or stored - before being transported somewhere else - such as a landfill.
This offers clear efficiencies and benefits to trucks - which can empty one suburbs bins - and then dump at a convenient location - before emptying another suburbs bins. This reduces the distance a truck will travel massively. This of course saves time, and reduces costs and emissions.
At the waste waste transfer station - the waste or recycling will be dumped by the truck - and it may be sorted by staff at the facility.
It also may be compacted - to make its transport to another facility such as a landfill more efficient.
Some facilities will even have a railway - and their own train station - to make the transfer of waste even easier.
Act 3 02:13
Having a waste transfer station nearby can be quite useful to local residents - as they often have many recycling services - many of which are free.
At most Aussie waste transfer stations - you can drop of green waste or cardboard as well as many types of e-waste free of charge.
It is always good to know where your local facility is.
