When I told people what I did, half of them laughed and the other half stopped inviting me to their group chats. I get it. I don’t blame them. If you hear someone say they went looking through the dark web “just to see,” you picture some idiot who wanted to watch bad videos or buy fake passports and then got what he deserved. I thought the same about other people. I used to read those stories like they were warnings in a textbook examples of what not to do. Then one night I told myself I’d prove I could handle it. I told myself I would look, learn, and close the window.

I study cybersecurity. That’s my major. I’ve taken classes on anonymity, on onion routing, on how metadata gives you away if you’re sloppy. I built VMs and ran network simulations for fun. I knew the basics: VPN plus Tor plus virtual machine gives you layers. You don’t need to be an expert to set that up. That confidence made me careless. It made me think a VPN and a locked-down machine were armor. They were not.
