Be Inspired To Gratitude: After Fleeing Genocide Pie Went From Car Guard To Mandela Rhodes Scholar

Описание: I had the distinct privilege of working with Pie many years ago soon after he graduated and started work as a business analyst. His story since then is almost as fascinating as the years prior and in this episode I shed a tear for the incredible example this fine gentleman and distinguished academic scholar presents to everyone, especially students needing a dose of the right mindset and inspiration. As a young boy growing up in Rwanda he saw family members killed and his mother begged him to leave the country to study and make a life for himself. With just the clothes on his back he ended up on the streets in Durban where he was a car guard outside a university. He tells the story of watching students swipe their student cards through the turnstiles and his heart ached to have the same privilege - he was so desperate that he even just wanted to hold a student card and feel what it was like to go through a turnstile. He learned English from old VHS cassettes in the Durban public library, but as a refugee he had to battle his way through red tape and endless challenges to get a bursary and finally start his Physics degree.

After being in hospital twice for depression he eventually finished his degree and in his honours year became part of the first international cohort of Nelson Mandela Rhodes scholars. Having listened on the radio to Nelson Mandela's release when he was a boy in war torn Rwanda, Pie eventually met his political hero and then made his way to Johannesburg to start his full time working life at a large bank. Since then he has travelled to over 20 countries in Africa and today he leads a business school and collaborates with top international universities like Yale and Manchester. Every time he confers a degree on one of his students he remembers how much he yearned to hold a student card and the long hard road he has travelled. His message for students is that execution matters, manage your time, apply yourself and remember that success is not about how smart you are, its much more about your daily discipline and resilience.

He's currently writing a book about his life, due to be published in late 2021. What's the most important thing he has learned through it all? No matter what he experienced, and no matter what you experience, try and always say; "in this too I am grateful".
