The Lasta Samyak Mahadan, a rare and spiritually profound Newa Buddhist almsgiving festival, is being observed after an extraordinary gap of 100 years at Nyakhachok, Lalitpur, on Poush 30 and Magh 1.
This centenary celebration honors Dipankara Buddha and represents one of the most elaborate Buddhist traditions in the Kathmandu Valley—deeply rooted in centuries-old rituals, family lineage, and communal devotion. While Samyak Mahadan is traditionally celebrated every five years in Patan (Lalitpur), this year’s observance marks a historic milestone, making it a once-in-a-lifetime cultural event.
The festival formally began with Halimpata Bwaykegu, a sacred ritual invoking Buddhas and deities. As per tradition, Panjadan offerings—prepared using Soh Muri (six muris) of rice stored at Sano Nag Falcha, Nagbahal—are distributed to Tathagatas, monks, Vajracharyas, Shakyas, deities, and devotees.
