The film tells the story of Ranbir Raj, a poor but educated orphan who comes to Bombay with dreams of success. However, he is soon seduced by the riches and unethical lifestyle presented by the dishonest businessman Seth Sonachand Dharmanand and the temptress Maya. Ranbir Raj becomes a confidence trickster, or "420," and cheats in card gambling. Vidya tries to make him a good man, but fails. The story unfolds with drama and emotion as Ranbir Raj realizes the high price he paid for wealth and decides to make things right.
