Origins and Site History
The site of Harrah’s Cherokee Casino was originally Frontier Land, a Wild West theme park that operated from 1964 to 1982 on 140 acres of tribal land in Cherokee, North Carolina. Frontier Land featured zones like Indian Territory, Fort Cherokee, and Deadwood Gulch, offering rides, mock attacks, and war dances for visitors. After the park closed and briefly became a water park, the land remained vacant until the mid-1990s.

Establishment of the Casino . . . . .
In 1994, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) negotiated a compact with the State of North Carolina to allow Class III gaming on tribal land. This agreement paved the way for the construction of the casino. Harrah’s Cherokee Casino officially opened on November 13, 1997, becoming the first casino in North Carolina. Initially, the casino offered 24-hour video poker and gaming machines for patrons aged 18 and older, later raised to 21 in 2001.
