Brumation is the reptile version or hibernation, and in this video the red belly black snake is bromating....kind of!
The red belly black snake is a deadly Australian snake. Well, it is known as a deadly Australian snake however whether it is actually deadly or not is debatable as there have been no confirmed snake deaths from the red belly black snake that I am aware of.
Anyhow, back to brumation. Apart from the fact that brumation is for reptiles and hibernation is for mammals, there are a few other more subtle differences.
When animals hibernate, they tend to go to sleep for the entire winter. Their breathing slows right down, the heart rate slows right down and they go into a deep sleep where they do not need to eat or drink for the entire season.
With brumation, when snakes bromate it is kind of the same. Their breathing slows, heart rate slow etc, however they still need to drink water from time to time, so every once in a while the snake will leave the spot where it is bromating, called a hibernaculum, and go somewhere close to get a drink. While out there they may even lay in the sun and catch a bit of warmth before heading back to their hibernaculum to continue with their brumation.
While the snakes are bromating, the moment the sun comes out and give just a small amount of warmth, they will sometimes just move outside their hibernaculum, lay nice and close and catch some warmth. They are usually reluctant to travel too far in case the sun disappears and they risk getting cold and unable to make their way back, leaving themselves open to prey.
Brumation versus hibernation. So similar yet uniquely different.
