We are asked to provide some visual inspection deliverables from a flare stack whilst operational in the UK. We chose our M21O V2 and Z30 30 x zoom visual sensor to allow for the extra distance required, so as not to cause significant damage to the equipment iin the eventuality that the flare was dynamically ignited.
The weather was relatively hard in terms of high wind profiles as can be noted from the drift in the sensor when closed in on the asset.
We can start to see the carbonisation of one of the incoloy flare tips due to the extreme heat over time during operation combined with elements and general day-to-day temperature changes from on extreme to the other. No major cause for concern but a potential defect to keep an eye on.
We were also tasked with collecting visual data from the Pennant guide wires supporting the flare stack constructed from galvanized steel to establish the condition of any strands, to establish whether any unnecessary stress has occurred, and the lubricant situation in the upper quarter.
During the inspection, it was also best practice to assess the level of corrosion around access and egress points. The steel ladders are clearly an important factor during any manned maintenance and should be prioritised during any dynamic and preventative maintenance.
As can be noted from the visual data chosen, the prevailing wind has caused significant corrosion with some material loss to the ladders, where the rung enters the angle iron side rail. Further none destructive weld inspection techniques will no doubt be required to establish the significance of any further damage.
