======================================
I still remember the first kingdom that burned.
Not because I saw it with my own eyes, but because I heard the story from the only two people who survived standing close enough to fight back. Back then, the paladin was only a young warrior. The witch was still learning how to shape her gifts. They were brave, but bravery without preparation is like a shield made of thin wood.
The dragon came in the night, tearing through stone and steel as if they were paper. It set rooftops on fire, crushed towers, and hunted people who tried to run. The two of them faced it anyway. They did not win. They barely lived.
Years passed. The paladin turned 28, and discipline became his second heartbeat. He trained until his arms shook, then trained again. He learned to move in heavy armor like it weighed nothing. He studied strategy, weak points, and how to keep fear from stealing his breath.
The witch reached 25, and her magic grew steadier and cleaner. She stopped chasing power and started building control. She learned how to protect first, strike second, and keep her mind calm while the world screamed.
When the dragon returned, it did not choose the same realm. It chose a new kingdom, a Middle Ages reign with proud walls and crowded streets. The first reports sounded unreal: burned farms, melted gates, and bodies found in places no weapon could reach.
A veteran captain named Garron brought the news to them with shaking hands. “It’s the same beast,” he said. “If you ever meant to stop it, the time is now.”
The paladin did not speak right away. He just looked at the witch. She nodded once. They had waited for this moment, not with hope, but with work.
This time, they would not rush in with a wish and a prayer.
This time, they would go in with a plan.
