Bengal Voter List Shock: 58 Lakh Names Missing Ahead of 2026 Polls

Описание: Ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, over 58 lakh voters have found their names missing from the draft electoral roll after the Election Commission carried out a Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The large-scale clean-up was aimed at correcting discrepancies in the voter list.

According to the Election Commission, more than 24 lakh names were removed as voters were recorded as deceased. Nearly 20 lakh names were deleted due to permanent relocation, while around 12 lakh voters were marked missing after officials failed to trace them at their registered addresses. Another 1.38 lakh names were removed because of duplicate entries.

Even high-profile constituencies were affected. In south Kolkata’s Bhowanipore, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee votes, 127 names were deleted from the draft list.

The Commission has also flagged data mismatches involving over 1.6 crore voters, including errors in age, gender, and parent details. These voters have not been deleted but are currently under verification.

Importantly, the Election Commission has clarified that this is not the final list. Voters and political parties have time till January 15 to file claims and objections. After hearings and verification, the final voter list will be published on February 14.

The ECI has urged voters to check their names and respond in time, stressing that deletion from the draft list does not automatically mean loss of voting rights.
