Everything You Need to Know About NASA’s Artemis II Space Launch System!
NASA has rolled out the Artemis II rocket, marking a major step toward sending humans back to the Moon for the first time since 1972. This mission will be the first crewed flight of NASA’s Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft, pushing astronauts beyond low Earth orbit once again. In this video, we break down what makes SLS so powerful and how it builds on Space Shuttle–era hardware redesigned for deep space. We’ll look at what changed since Artemis I and why flying with a crew completely reshaped the rocket’s safety systems. You’ll learn about key upgrades to the core stage, boosters, upper stage, and ground systems at Kennedy Space Center. We also walk through what launch day looks like, from engine ignition to booster separation. Plus, we explain how Artemis II prepares NASA for future lunar missions and long-term exploration. We’ll cover where SLS fits compared to newer rockets like SpaceX’s Starship. And finally, we look ahead at future SLS versions and what they could enable—if the program continues. This is everything you need to know about the rocket that will take humans back toward the Moon.
Everything You Need to Know About NASA’s Artemis II Space Launch System!
Recently, NASA rolled the Artemis II rocket out in preparation for a historic moment. For the first time since the Apollo program ended in 1972, humans are heading back toward the Moon. When you look at this massive rocket, it’s natural to wonder what NASA has done to get it ready for such a big day. Did it get new upgrades? Is it different from Artemis I?
Here’s everything you need to know about the Space Launch System that will power Artemis II.
Space Launch System:
As I mentioned earlier, NASA’s Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft rolled out to the launch pad for the Artemis 2 mission on January 17. That doesn’t mean the launch date is locked in just yet, but it is a huge milestone. The massive SLS rocket, sitting on its mobile launch platform, started moving out of the Vehicle Assembly Building at 7:04 a.m. Eastern. NASA’s crawler-transporter slowly carried the entire 11-million-pound stack along the four-mile path to Launch Pad 39B at a speed of about one mile per hour. After an all-day journey, the rocket finally arrived at the pad at 6:42 p.m. Eastern.

This rollout officially kicks off the final stretch of preparations for Artemis 2, which will be the first crewed flight of SLS and Orion and the first time humans travel beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17 back in 1972. NASA only allows a rollout if the weather cooperates, since conditions like lightning nearby, hail, strong winds, or extreme temperatures could damage the rocket. For this move, everything stayed within safe limits, so the rollout went ahead without issue.
This is only the second time NASA has rolled out its most powerful rocket for launch, so it’s fair to wonder if anything is different this time—especially since Artemis 2 will carry astronauts. Before getting into upgrades or changes, it helps to take a step back and look at what this rocket actually is.
