Many 1960s homes in Northeast Atlanta have good bones and tons of mid-century charm, however, they also come with layout design choices that simply don’t fit modern tastes.
In this video we break down five major design problems we discovered in this 1960s property and how our team tackled the redesign to create a functional, modern home while preserving its mid-century charm.
Here’s what we tackled:
1. Closed-off kitchen with hanging cabinets
The original kitchen felt small and cramped due to the hanging cabinets and wasted space. We closed a window to move the refrigerator into that space, improved sightlines, and redesigned the cabinetry layout to create a bright, open-concept kitchen perfect for modern living.
2. Laundry closet inside the kitchen + no pantry
Locating the laundry in the kitchen reduced storage and functionality. So we took the redundant formal dining space for creating a new walk-in-pantry and laundry room.
3. Awkward fireplace placement in the den
The fireplace layout prevented proper seating arrangements and limited the room’s usability. We demolished the fireplace to open up the layout, repurposed the space for the dining room, and built a wet bar to create a balanced focal point and allow for a comfortable, functional area.
4. Oversized guest bath but undersized primary bath
The home originally had a large guest bathroom while the primary bathroom was cramped with only one sink and a tiny shower. We demolished the entire area to the studs and reallocated the square footage to create a spacious primary bath with double vanities and a large shower, while maintaining a well-sized guest bathroom and linen closet.
5. Basement rooms not counted in appraisal
The basement had two finished bedrooms but no full bathroom, which meant the square footage would not be fully recognized in an appraisal. By adding a macerator sump pump we were able to install a new full bathroom, which increased both functionality and boosted the property value.
If you own a mid-century home in need of a serious renovation, we hope this project inspires you. We’ve spent the last ten years renovating such properties, and we’ve seen it all.
