Saranda Forest , Asia’s largest Sal forest, is located on the southern border of Jharkhand, stretching along the Jharkhand-Odisha border.
Land of Seven Hundred Hills: Saranda Forest, also known as Saranda Jungle, is famed for its scenic beauty. Encompassing an area of over 800 sq km, it's named after "Saranda" which translates to "seven hundred hills" in the local language. The forest terrain is undulating with several peaks ranging from 200 to 900 meters.
Asia's Largest Sal Forest: The crowning glory of Saranda Forest is its dense cover of Sal trees, making it the largest Sal forest in Asia. Sal trees are a hardwood species known for their tall stature and yellowish-white wood. Apart from Sal, the forest is home to a variety of other trees including Mahua, Kusum, Tilai, Harin Hara, Gular, and Asan.
Rich Biodiversity: The lush vegetation of Saranda Forest provides habitat to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Elephants, tigers, leopards, sambars, chital, and bison are some of the many mammals found here. The forest is also home to numerous bird species, reptiles, and insects.
Tribal Communities: The Saranda Forest region is inhabited by the Ho tribe, who have a deep connection with the forest. Their lives and culture are closely intertwined with the forest's resources.
How to Reach:
By Train: The nearest major railway stations are Jamshedpur Tatanagar (TATA) and Chakradharpur (CKP). Cabs and buses are easily available from both stations to reach the forest periphery.
By Air: The closest airport is Jamshedpur Airport (IXJ) at about 122 km from the forest. Taxis and cabs are available from the airport to reach the forest.
