South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir fired the country’s army chief, the police chief and the Governor of the Central Bank in a swift move on Monday night. The move comes as a surprise and as a major shake-up in South Sudan’s highest-levels of officials. According to reports, there was distrust in the South Sudanese army after several officers raised issues against the President. The Army officials have reportedly not received salaries for nearly a year. South Sudan’s President Kiir has been undertaking a shake-up in the country’s corridors of power since October when he first fired the national security chief. In November, he ordered the arrest of the former head of national intelligence, which led to gun violence in capital Juba. The recent shake-up comes as South Sudan’s economy crumbles, with elections in 2026.
