EU Citizens and Non-EU Citizens
If you want to work in Italy, work remotely from Italy or retire in the country
Advantages and disadvantages of living in Italy

00:54 EU Citizens

-EU citizens enjoy freedom of movement in Italy.
-They can work and live in Italy with the same rights as Italian nationals.

01:41 Non EU Citizens

Most common types of visas are for family reunion, employment visa, etc.

02:25 Freelancer (self-employed)

-One interesting option to live and work in Italy is becoming a freelancer (self-employed)
-Firstly you need to get your work authorization in Italy (this can be done by through power of attorney or you can come to Italy before to arrange all the paperwork)
-Then you have to apply for a visa before hand to enter Italy with the correct self-employment visa
-If you are already in Italy as a student, you can change your status to self-employment. However this only applies to some types of studies.

03:32 Elective Visa

-Another option is the elective visa, if you want to live in the country, but you don’t plan to work in Italy.
-This type of residency is ideal if you are a retiree, or if you are financially independent earning income from company dividends, or rental properties for example. You can combine more than one source of income for this purpose.
-The financial requirements are rather high for this type of residency, you need to show an income of at least 2600 euros per month in order to apply.

04:41 Investor Visa

-The investor visa is a good option for both passive or active investors who want to reside in Italy
-The financial requirements are much higher than the elective visa or the self-employment visa, but the procedure is less bureaucratic and the visa is more flexible if you have the financial requirements.
-The most affordable financial investment in this category is 250k into an innovative Italian startup.
-The second option is investing 500k in an Italian limited company, which I consider the best option for this visa.
-You can otherwise donate 1 million euros to charity projects, or invest 2 million euros in bonds. At these price points, there are definitely better and less risky options elsewhere in Europe.

05:43 Italian Ancestry

-If you have Italian ancestry, you can move to Italy, acquire your Italian nationality and become an EU citizen.
-Italian citizenship has some of the easiest requirements in terms of what you need from your ancestor to acquire citizenship.
-A number of companies work in document research, so even if you don’t know the exact date of births of your Italian ancestors, you still have a good chance to get it.
-Many people from the US, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Australia acquire Italian citizenship through ancestry, without speaking Italian and some even without ever visiting the country.

07:01 Permanent residency in Italy and Citizenship by naturalization

To Acquire permanent residency in Italy as a non-EU citizen you need to live in the country for 5 years continuously

Citizenship without ancestry:

In most cases you can acquire Italian citizenship if you have lived in the country for 10 years, but there are some exceptions to that rule:
-Marriage to an Italian citizen
-EU citizens of another EU country, can apply after 4 years.

08:31 Advantages of living in Italy:

-Full EU member, eurozone member.
-Excellent weather.
-Excellent entertainment, leisure and culture options.
-Top Transport infrastructure.

09:39 Disadvantages

-High taxes.
-Slow bureaucratic processes.
-Low prevalence of English speakers.
