This video shows the timber driving dams that were once part of the New Zealand timber industry. In the early days of kauri logging the dams were used to move huge quantities of kauri logs from high up in the hills to more readily accessible areas. When water levels were high enough, the dam doors would be tripped and the logs flushed downstream. The video includes the only know film of a kauri log drive, probably taken in the late 1920s.
