Dr Jessica Randall-Carrick talks about cardiovascular risk, often known as QRISK - which is your personal likelihood of having a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years.
Cardiovascular disease is described as: heart attacks/ angina; stroke/ TIA; aortic/peripheral arterial disease.
Things that increase your CVD risk include age, sex and ethnicity; whether you have smoked, living with excess weight; high blood pressure (hypertension); high cholesterol; high blood sugar (pre-diabetes or diabetes); chronic kidney disease, or have a family history of heart attacks or strokes under the age of 60yrs old.
Examples of QRISK 20% and QRISK 10% are given.
Dr Randall-Carrick also describes a common medication, known as Statins, that can reduce your risk of having a heart attack or stroke; and stresses the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.
