The title of "world's first skyscraper" is often awarded to Chicago's Home Insurance Building, which was completed in 1885. Designed by William Le Baron Jenney, this groundbreaking structure rose to a height of 10 stories, a remarkable achievement at the time. What made the Home Insurance Building particularly revolutionary was its use of a steel-frame construction. Until then, tall buildings were constructed with thick, load-bearing walls that limited their height due to the enormous weight. Jenney's steel-frame design allowed for much taller structures while using thinner walls, thus paving the way for modern skyscrapers.

Chicago became the birthplace of the skyscraper largely due to a confluence of factors. The city was rapidly growing during the late 19th century, thanks in part to its strategic location as a hub for transportation and commerce. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 also played a role, destroying much of the city's wooden infrastructure and making way for new construction. This period of rebuilding created an environment ripe for architectural innovation.
