We look at the composition of the assets and liabilities and the manner in which the Fed can create currency and then inject that into the money supply. Disucsses Quantitative Easing and how banks are paid when they sell bonds to the Fed by means of a Fed book entry which increases the reserve balances of the banks from whom the Fed is buying. Discusses the average maturity of the outstanding Treasury securities and compares that to the average maturity of gilts in the UK government bond market.
