How to replace and bias the tubes inside a Line 6 Spider Valve guitar amplifier. IMPORTANT: Read Below.
There's a design flaw in this particular amplifier that causes the components above the tubes to overheat. There's ZERO air flow above the tubes. As the heat rises from the tubes, it has a tendency to cause damage to the above circuit board enclosure that is actually completely enclosed. It is not an uncommon issue for these to fail from this defect in engineering. What I did was cut open a circular hole on each side and install two 12v DC fans with a 12v power supply (one pushing air, one pulling air).
The JJ tubes I had installed are NOT compliant with the manufacturer. This may cause additional heat. However, I have NEVER had a better sounding amp. I have used it on stage for 3 years (mic'ed) with no issues. Aside from the faults in this amp, it beats the sound of any top dollar tube amp I'd ever owned. The best part about this amp is that it has an incredibly diverse sound that can be dialed in to just about any style.
