Composed in the early 1904-1905, these two Tales reveal striking contrasts within a seemingly compact form. The first Tale is a concentrated, sharply profiled miniature whose intensity and compressed expression anticipate aspects of early 20th-century musical language.

The second Tale unfolds on an entirely different scale: an astonishingly dense work in sonata form, pushing the limits of pianistic complexity and structural concentration.

The disproportion between brevity and overwhelming architectural force reflects a distinctly non-classical mode of thinking and signals the emerging modernist sensibility in Medtner’s early works. The expressive impact of this music is both powerful and deeply introspective.
